Direct Instruction® – Reading & Writing
Kradwell is proud to be utilizing the SRA Direct Instruction® program
for both reading and writing instruction. Direct Instruction
teaches explicit strategies and a variety of skills necessary for
students to achieve success.
The reading program provides students with strategic and carefully
integrated series of skills. Comprehension and decoding skills are
taught and progress is documented. Direct Instruction is a proven
systematic approach to reading.
The writing program is designed for students who are able to construct a
simple paragraph but have problems with clarity, sentence variety and
punctuation. The program will help students to focus on writing
intelligibility, dialogue and editing skills.
As with all classes at Kradwell, the student teacher ratio is
5:1. Teachers develop individual programs of study
specific to each student’s individual learning and behavioral
characteristics.
Teachers are experienced with a wide range of emotional social and
behavioral issues and create a safe educational environment conducive to
success.

Attendance:
The first day of summer school is Tuesday, June 17th
and the last day is Wednesday, July 30th. In
order to grant .50 high school credit per course students must be
present. * Absences in excess 3 school days impact the student’s
final grade. Refer to the Grade Cap Policy.
*Family vacations, camp or other prescheduled activities occurring
during summer school can be accommodated.
Grade cap policy:
Classroom attendance is vital because many instructional activities
include the following: demonstrations, cooperative learning experiences,
videos, oral directions/ explanations, and the practice of appropriate
social skills. We believe that classroom-learning experiences,
which are interactive, are more effective than passive learning
experiences, which are not interactive and done outside the classroom.
The Grade Cap is tiered and based on the number of absences/tardies
during the summer session. All absences/tardies (except the
following exceptions) will count towards this grade cap. If a
parent reports their son/daughter ill for the day, the student will be
marked absent and make-up work will be given to the student.
However, the absence will count toward the grade cap schedule.
The following absences/tardies will not count toward the grade cap:
Absences accompanied by a doctor’s excuse, stating that the student was
not able to attend due to a medical or psychological reason.
The excuse must be turned in immediately following the absence.
Absences that may be due to non-medical reasons but are deemed
permissible by the Principal or Assistant Principal.
